20世纪90年代，铺路工人陈也对商场营业员李招娣一见钟情，用尽花招求婚成功，许诺婚后考托福出国、升官发财，带招娣奔小康。招娣自小娇生惯养，婚后小姐脾气尽显，为支持陈也考托福，包揽全部家务，最终陈也落榜，出国梦碎。单位要陈也交入党申请书，自以为被提拔。招娣做起官太太梦，高调炫耀后美梦落空。陈也下岗，经历作医药代表被骗、炒股失败的打击，渴望的美好生活渐行渐远，查出不孕的招娣彻底绝望，在海归商人的攻势下，开始怀疑自己当初的选择。坐在车里的招娣看到陈也冒雨掏阴沟的身影百感交集，跑入雨中撑伞陪伴，两人相约再不分开。一年后，招娣产下一子。

This lighthearted comedy vividly depicts the good and bad times of a common couple’s marriage, reflecting people’s aspiration for a better life. Chen Ye is a road maker. He falls in love with the shop assistant Li Zhaodi at first sight. To ask Li Zhaodi to marry him, he exhaust all kinds of tricks and promise her that he will pass the TOEFL examination, bring her to US and give her a good life. Li Zhaodi is a spoiled girl. But she willingly does all the housework after they get married just to support Chen Ye and hope he can be successful.
